Brandon and I woke up WAY to early day of our flight. Our flight didn't leave until almost 3 PM, but we still managed to wake up around 6 AM. So, it was a long day for me. I was so excited to go and then the car ride from Salem seemed extra long to the airport. Our first flight was to Chicago. It wasn't a bad flight at all. It actually went really fast. I put Pirates of the Caribbean on during the flight; this could be why the flight seemed to go fast. :)
On our connecting flight to Frankfurt we looked at our tickets and realized they didn't have us sitting together. WTF. Don't you think if two people are booking tickets together at the same time on the same credit card you'd put them next to each other? So we had to mad dash it to the counter and ask if they could help us out. The gate was FULL. There was SO many people waiting to get on our flight. I thought for sure I'd be stuck next to someone stinky for a 7 hour flight. But my man at the counter helped us out! He got us next to each other. The only bad thing about the flight was the people on it. The guy behind Brandon kept pulling on Brandons chair to get up. And he got up SO much! The people in front of us kept moving. I guess they couldn't find a position for the seats that pleased them. Then the people across the hall from us were so stinky and had a baby that wouldn't stop crying with them. It was such an awesome flight.. I'm lying.
But when we got close to Germany it was exciting. I couldn't wait to get off the plane! I love the window seat. I love to look out. Which is funny, because I hate Google Earth. It scares the crap out of me.. (don't ask) Looking down on Germany was so beautiful. You could see all the farming areas and little villages with the houses with little red roofs! I loved it!
When we landed, Brandons parents and Muriel and Barbara were there to greet us. This was the first time I had ever met Muriel and Barbara. When greeting Barbara I think I made my first international mistake... I swear she was leaning in for a hug. But now when I think about it.. I shouldn't have hugged that Germany woman. She probably thought I was so weird. :)
Germany is crazy. They let animals anywhere. Muriel and Barbara had their dogs with them. They were such cute dogs! Molly is a pug and belongs to Muriel. And Gizmo is some kind of beautiful dog with chocolate brown hair and belongs to Barbara. Both dogs were so cute and funny.
After we found our cars, we had to drive about 2 hours west to get to Barbara's house (that is where we stayed) in Bergheim. We got to drive on the autobahn! I've always heard stories about the crazy European high.. We were driving SO fast! But it wasn't scary, because everyone was driving SO fast. At one point we were going 215 kph (130ish mph)!! Muriel says that the autobahn is pretty safe. That they don't have to many fatal car crashes. Which really surprised me. I only got car sick once while driving with Muriel (she tends to be a little crazy behind the wheel). I thought for sure it would be more.
Bergheim is BEAUTIFUL! Muriel and Barbara acted like it was nothing. That is was boring. I thought it was lovely. It was what I always picture when I think of old Europe.
The whole trip felt like we ate a whole lot and walked even more. Every morning we'd wake up and eat a "German Breakfast" which was bread, ham, cheese, and jams. I had THE BEST jam ever while I was there! It was raspberry mango! It was sooooo good! I could eat it by the spoon full... and I did. :) We would go for cake and coffee (or hot chocolate) every single day. And they don't just give you a small slice of cake.. it's HUGE. And very very delicious.
The picture of the cakes is in this old old building in Aachan, Germany. It has this cute, steep, spiral staircase going up to this cute little loft. Oh.. I loved it in Aachan. I could live there! It is an amazing city! The other picture is of a cute coffee shop in Düsseldorf, Germany (yes, where Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is from). Düsseldorf is also very awesome. Germany in general is clean.. beautiful.. and full of Germans. :)
This picture is in Aachan. I just think the city was amazing. Everywhere in Germany (Europe) has SO much history. It makes America look like a baby. I had lunch in a building that Beethoven use to go to! It's all so crazy to me. Not to mention WWII. I can't believe all these beautiful cities and towns I was in were once Nazi occupied. So much hate in a city that has nothing but beauty. If you look at the picture, you'll see Brandon and the woman on the right is Muriel. You'll also see an amazing old church. I don't know how old it is, but the bell started to ring while we were walking down this street (which is cobblestone! Yay!)
I have so many pictures of Aachan and Düsseldorf, but if I posted them all.. this blog would never end. So I've picked just this one. I think this picture sums it up. Beautiful cobblestone streets that have old buildings surrounding, a church that seems to be welcoming you in with it's ringing bell. Ahh.. I loved it there. :)
Ok. I'm getting really tired.. I'll write another blog later and finish my trip. :)
To be continued...

Wow Lou it is beautiful just as you grandfather told me. I think he also loved the country and most of the people he met while there in the mid 50's with the US Army. We would love to go there but doubt we will. Glad you get to travel and see the world. Love you lots Gma
I am so glad you had a good time. I like hearing your stories since I will probably never get there :0) Glad you got home safely too. The kids' presents are so fun!
